NEW ORLEANS – For the third consecutive week, a Texas State soccer player was selected for one of the two weekly Sun Belt Conference awards. Earning the honor this week was junior goalkeeper
Heather Martin for her performances over the weekend at Louisiana and South Alabama.
Martin recorded 15 saves with a .938 save percentage and a 0.455 GAA in the two matches. She began with five stops in the 2-1 double overtime victory over the Ragin' Cajuns.
The Midlothian, Texas native followed with one of the best matches of her career on Sunday against the five-time defending conference champion Jaguars. Martin recorded 10 saves, seven of which came in the second half, in the contest to tie her career-high.
Over the final 10 minutes of the contest, she made four saves with the biggest coming with 1:04 left on the clock. The junior was able to get her hands on Ana Helmert's shot but saw the ball get by her and trickle towards the goal line. Martin was able to recover and make a diving stop while keeping the ball from going over the line to preserve the 1-0 win.
Martin's 10-save performance was the second double-digit save match of her career with the first also coming against USA to close out the 2017 season. She is just the sixth Bobcat keeper to record multiple double-digit save matches in program history.
The two victories gave her 19 in her career to move into a tie with former assistant coach and player
Lauren Frazier (2010-11) for fourth in program history.
In Sun Belt matches only, Martin leads the conference with 19 saves and two shutouts. Her 0.31 GAA ranks third but is the lowest among goalkeepers that have played at least two matches.
The weekly Sun Belt award is the first this season for Martin and fourth in her career. She earned three last season in a four week span. Martin joins
Kaylee Davis as Bobcats to be recognized this year.
TXST is back home at the Bobcat Soccer Complex this weekend for two Sun Belt matches against Little Rock on Friday at 7 p.m. and Arkansas State at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
